Santa Clara University Celebrates Pope Francis as Time Magazine's Person of the Year

Friday, Dec. 13, 2013

Santa Clara University celebrates the selection of Pope Francis as Time magazine’s Person of the Year, an honorific previously given to peacemakers including Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., and popes John XXIII and John Paul II.

We share the optimism and reverence for the world’s first Jesuit Pope, whom Time notes has put “mercy at the core of his life” and put himself at the service of the world’s poor, victimized or marginalized.

By representing the best of the ideals of the Order of the Society of Jesus,  Pope Francis reminds us all that we are called to put our gifts to work not for competitive advantage, divisive dogma, or self-preservation, but rather as “servants and comforters of hurting people in an often harsh world,” as Time noted.

May we all be inspired by Pope Francis’ mission and values, and unleash our own “untold good” on the world during the holiday season and every day.
