Finding a path to helping others

Maggi Van Dorn '08

B.A. religious studies

Maggi Van Dorn came to Santa Clara with a desire to help others, and at the University found a path that fosters her intellectual and spiritual growth as well.

“For the rest of my life, I know I will be striving to live deeper into the education that Santa Clara has instilled in me,” she says.

A religious studies major, Van Dorn started studying social work after graduation. Real-world experience she gained as a research assistant for Religious Studies Assistant Professor Thomas Beaudoin helped set her in this direction.

As an undergraduate, Maggi interned for a summer at the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, attended a two-week seminar at Boston College, and participated in several scholarly conferences. She also interned at a San Jose homeless shelter through SCU’s Arrupe Center for Community-based Learning.

Van Dorn is also currently writing a book, with two other Santa Clara recent grads, on the spiritual and theological perspectives of young, Catholic women: “We wanted to extend this conversation found among friends at Santa Clara to young Catholic women everywhere.”
