Window into the research world

Biochemistry major

Working with Assistant Chemistry Professor Steven Suljak, Michael Hayes has gotten a good picture of how a research lab functions. He and fellow research assistants work here to find aptamers useful for identifying diseases.

He says the best part of his undergraduate experience has been working closely with faculty members. He’s gotten to know many members of the chemistry and biochemistry department.

“It’s such a small department. I really love the fact that I know every professor. It’s a really close-knit community,” he says.

Hayes says the research has cemented his plans to pursue medical school after graduation.
