The Center is excited to have Professor Emily McAnany presenting about the Center at Santa Clara University's Family Weekend, February 22 & 23.

The focus of Family Weekend is to welcome parents and family members of our undergraduate students to campus so that they have the opportunity to experience a portion of their student's life at Santa Clara University. To this end, we encourage parents to participate in a variety of academic, athletic and social events designed to give family members a tantalizing taste of Santa Clara. And, yes, siblings are invited to attend the weekend! The Center's session is titled, "Promoting Science & Technology for Social Benefit".

Emile G. McAnany, Walter E. Schmidt, S.J., Professor of Communication

Academic/professional background:Before coming to Santa Clara in 1997, Dr. McAnany was Ben F. Love Professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he taught for seventeen years. Prior to that he taught in the Communication Department at Stanford University from 1972-78 where he earned his Ph.D. in communication in 1971.

Teaching areas/responsibilities: Dr. McAnany teaches: International Commmunication (Globalization, International Television and Media, International News, Cultural Export and Trade Regimes); Mass Communication (Mass Communication Theory, Media Audiences and Introduction to Mass Communication); Methodology (Qualitative Methodology).

Research interests: He has focused his research on the social and cultural impacts of various communication technologies in Third World countries, especially Latin America. Recent publications include;Mass Media and Free Trade: NAFTA and the Cultural Industries;(University of Texas Press, 1996) and a number of articles in communication journals in the U.S. and Latin America. Since 1995 he has been involved with colleagues in Austin and Brazil on a multi-year research project on the social impact of television on fertility transitions. He also continues work on the expansion of cultural industries internationally and cultural consequences for global audiences.

What do families do during Family Weekend?

We have designed the weekend to have components of interest for all our undergraduate classes, and encourage our students to attend sessions with their parents. The weekend is of particular interest for the members of the Class of 2013, as their Senior Parent Dinner Dance marks just over 100 days until graduation.

Do I need to register?

You need to register if you plan on attending any of the Family Weekend sessions or events. Registration needs to be postmarked or completed online by Friday, Feb. 8, 2013, to avoid a late registration fee.

What offices will be open on campus during Family Weekend?

The following SCU Offices will be open Friday, Feb. 22 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
