President's Speaker SeriesSanta Clara University is proud to present the third annual President's Speaker Series. All events will be held in the Louis B. Mayer Theatre. Tickets are $25 for individual events or $75 for the complete series; discounts available for students, staff, faculty, and Osher Institute members. VIP packages are also offered for this series.

    "The Collision of Politics, Religion, and Race"

    Ordained Baptist minister, cultural commentator, and author of the new book, April 4, 1968: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Death and How It Changed America, Michael Eric Dyson will discuss such questions as, how can the African American church remain vital in the 21st century? What can bridge the religious racial divide in America? And finally, what messages would Martin Luther King Jr. have for our world today?

    Santa Clara graduate, Lisa Sowle Cahill '70, will speak on Catholic notions of feminism, politics, peacemaking and ethics in the 21st century.  Cahill serves as the J. Donald Monan, S.J., Professor of Theology at Boston College, has authored several important books on modern Catholic teachings, and was recently appointed a political advisor to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

    Washington Post columnist and political commentator E.J. Dionne Jr. will probe prevalent yet controversial issues involving the modern-day intersection of religion and politics while arguing that American religion is undergoing a renaissance emerging as a liberal force pushing social justice, education, health care, peacemaking, and concern for the poor and elderly.

    “God and Politics in the Middle East”

    Avraham Burg has been a leading figure in Israeli politics for the last 20 years; he is a former Speaker of the Knesset, leader of the World Zionist Organization, and author of the book, The Holocaust is Over; We Must Rise from its Ashes. He will look at the issues of peace in the Middle East, the state of Israel and its people, and whether religion prevents political systems from working effectively to promote progress.

Directions

If you are coming from U.S. Highway 101, take the De La Cruz Boulevard/Santa Clara exit. Follow De La Cruz Boulevard towards El Camino Real (stay in the right lane). When De La Cruz Boulevard splits, follow the right split over the overpass. Turn right on Lafayette Street staying in the right turn lane. Turn right at El Camino Real. The main entrance to Santa Clara University will be on the right-hand side of the road.

If you are coming from Interstate 880, take The Alameda exit. Travel north on The Alameda. The Alameda will become El Camino Real. The main entrance to Santa Clara University will be on the left-hand side of the road.

If you are coming from Interstate 280, take Interstate 880 north toward Oakland. Exit at The Alameda. Turn left on The Alameda. The Alameda will become El Camino Real. The main entrance to Santa Clara University will be on the left-hand side of the road.

The Mayer Theatre is in the northwest corner of Mission Gardens, behind the Mission Church. Locate the Mayer Theatre on the campus map.
