Supplemental Salary Support

1. Fourth Quarter/Summer Supplemental Salary

For full-time research or a full-time combination of teaching and research, a faculty member may be paid up to a maximum of 3/9 of his or her annual base salary during the summer quarter. For less than twelve weeks of such service, or less than full- time, prorated amounts may be earned.

Since summer quarter salary is paid for work accomplished over varying actual time periods within the period from mid-June to mid-September, payment is reimbursed at the salary rate in effect for the preceding academic year. This holds true for "fourth quarter" work performed or payments received in September when the next academic year's salary rate is in effect.

Individuals on 12 month appointments are not eligible for supplemental salary support from sponsored projects.

2. Academic Year Supplemental Salary

Faculty members receiving full-time salary support may not receive supplemental salary support from sponsored projects during the academic year. The level of effort, expressed as a percentage of time, that a faculty member commits to spend on any sponsored project must be consistent with other academic duties. The total percentage of time committed (1) in the budgets of active sponsored projects, (2) for cost-sharing and other contributed effort, (3) teaching, and (4) administrative efforts must not exceed 100% of the individual's total full-time University appointment.

Occasionally, however, overload situations may occur when it is necessary for full- time tenured or tenure-track faculty to make additional contributions to special programs and symposia which exceed the usual requirements of teaching, research and service. In these instances, supplemental payments must be authorized by the Dean in advance of the service being performed.
