University Support

1. Internal University Grants

Twice each academic year applications are accepted for three kinds of internal grants for faculty projects:

  • Research Grants support projects that are likely to lead to significant publication or support from external sponsors. Upon completion of their projects, recipients of University research grants of $1,000 or more are expected to work with the Sponsored Projects Office to develop a plan for obtaining external funding.
  • Teaching Grants support projects that are likely to improve the quality of education at Santa Clara University through curricular or pedagogical innovation. Preference is given to projects that involve more than one faculty member, enhance the University Curriculum, or promise to have a significant impact on an entire school, department or program. Applicants for teaching grants are encouraged to consult with the Director of the Teaching & Learning Center before submitting proposals.
  • Proposal Development Grants provide a teaching load reduction of one course to develop a grant proposal for external funding. Preference is given to faculty members who have not submitted a successful grant proposal in the past five years and whose project has high potential for outside funding. Applicants for a proposal development grant should consult with the Director of Sponsored Projects before submitting proposals.

Although there are no absolute limits, most University grants fall in the range of $500 to $4,000. Grants are not provided for faculty salaries, sabbatical projects, or tuition remission. Course reductions are available only for Proposal Development Grants.

At the beginning of the fall quarter a memo is sent to faculty announcing these grants, application procedures and deadline dates. The application deadline for projects beginning in the fall or winter is in late October. The deadline for projects beginning in the spring or summer is in early April.

2. Junior Faculty Fellowships

The University currently offers two Junior Faculty Fellowships, named for the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation and Paul L. Locatelli, S.J., which provide tenure-track faculty in the middle of their seven-year probationary period with two critical assets for professional advancement: an extended period of time for intensive research and funds to cover the basic costs of the research. Fellowship recipients receive full salary, as well as up to $3,500 for project expenses, while being released from all teaching and other University assignments for one academic term.

A memo is sent to eligible junior faculty in the fall, which specifies the deadline date and application procedures. Applications usually are due in February.
