Center for Science, Technology and Society

STS Minor

The Center for Science, Technology, and Society offers an interdisciplinary minor in science, technology, and society to provide students an integrated understanding of how science and technology shape society, and how society shapes the trajectory of science and the development of technology. The program introduces students to the ethical dimensions of technology development and application; an understanding of the impact of science and technology on society; and the knowledge of how science and technology can contribute to the common good.

The minor consists of 4 courses in the development of science and technology, and 3 in the social forces shaping science and technology. In addition, students in the minor must also attend at least four Center for Science, Technology, and Society symposia or colloquia [STS Events], and write brief critical summaries for discussion with the minor adviser. The approved courses are listed below, but students may petition to have other courses count. This minor will be revised as new STS classes are developed for the core curriculum, beginning Fall 2009. To add the minor in STS, contact the minor advisor, CSTS assistant director for education, Keith Warner. This minor will be revised to incorporate new STS courses as they are being developed.
