AffiliationsSCU Faculty AffiliatesSanta Clara University faculty members are encouraged to participate in the work of the Centers of Distinction. The Center for Science, Technology, and Society offers two types of faculty affiliations. STS Associates are active contributors to the Center's work and support the STS mission. Related teaching, service, and research are considered in making this designation. STS Scholars receive financial support from the Center in the form of research grants or scholar stipends. In this way the Center promotes collaborative research that is interdisciplinary or that builds bridges between university-based scholars and external peers in business, government, and research centers outside the university setting. Other AffiliatesDr. Robert D. Atkinson, President of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (a Washington, DC-based technology policy think tank), visited the Center on January 27, 2005 to discuss his book, The Past and Future of America's Economy: Long Waves of Innovation that Power Cycles of Growth (Northampton, MA: Edward Elgar, 2005). The Past and Future focuses on how periodic cycles of technological and economic change have fundamentally reordered the way we work, the organization of business and markets, and the role of government. It examines this process of change during the past 150 years and explores the responses of people and institutions. As a leading policy figure in the area of technology and economy, Rob led an interesting discussion about these topics at an invitation- only lunch hosted by Regis McKenna and the Center for Science, Technology, and Society. Rob Atkinson also debated RFID opponent Katherine Albrecht at the 16th annual Conference on Computers, Freedom and Privacy on May 4th, 2006. In his opening remarks he highlighted not only the enormous benefits of widespread deployment of RFID technology, but also how the privacy concerns expressed by RFID opponents are either vastly overstated or simply wrong.
