  • Executive Scholar, Susan "Leigh" Star -On September 18 at Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Susan Leigh Star, Sr. STS Center Scholar presented Residual Categories: Silence, Absence and Being an Other, a talk addressing the widespread use of residual categories (for example, none of the above) in classification systems.   • Pedro Hernández- Ramos (Center for Science, Technology, and Society) is the lead author (with James L. Koch, Albert Bruno, and Eric Carlson) of an article published in the October/November 2007 issue of Innovate-Journal of Online Education, “Designing the Online Collaboratory for the Global Social Benefit Incubator.” The publication also sponsored a “webinar” presentation of the article conducted by Hernández-Ramos and Koch which was recorded and can be retrieved online.   • Chad Raphael and Christine Bachen (Communication Department) published "Portrayals of information and communication technology on world wide web sites for girls" in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, vol. 11, no. 3, May 2006. The article was co-authored with former student Kathleen M. Lynn and current students Jessica Baldwin-Philippi and Kristen McKee. The authors were funded by a grant from the Center for Science, Technology, and Society.
