The Challenge: Contemporary challenges in a global, virtual marketplace are multidimensional across technical, regulatory, social, and ethical arenas. Within the new Internet network, technically enhanced fraud – in the form of phishing, for example—has become rife. How can this be stopped? A virtual marketplace establishes new forms of relationships, with the resulting need for codified regulations, effectively implemented and enforced for mutual benefit. What set of best business and legal practices should be in place to ensure integrity over this Web-based marketplace? Social and ethical dimensions across this marketplace touch on reputation, customer experience, and word of mouth endorsements, suggesting new solutions – such as reputation servers – as essential components. Especially with the growth of Web 2.0, we confront a new challenge: how can marketplace merchants and customers create appropriate, robust ways of developing trust relationships across the network? How do we create confidence in delegating trust to the network? Vision: This workshop brought together leaders from government, industry, and academia, to evaluate Internet integrity challenges with the goal of forging creative solutions. Workshop participants sought to identify and establish collaborative partners, committed to fostering ethics and integrity across the global marketplace – for mutual benefit. We accomplished this through a rigorous exploration of technical, regulatory, and social challenges, providing best practices examples and promoting network solutions designed to safeguard integrity and trust as a characteristic of this new global marketplace. |
