J1 On-Campus Employment Authorization
All J‐1 students who wish to engage in any on‐campus employment MUST obtain employment authorization from ISS before beginning work. J‐1 students who wish to work on campus should first submit a request to International Student Services (ISS). To submit a request, please first review the information below.
Eligibility for On-Campus Employment
- Must be full‐time student or engaged in prescribed non-degree academic program
- Have a valid DS‐2019
- Be in good academic standing at SCU: Your authorization to work will end when you complete your academic program, even if your DS‐2019 still appears valid.
General Guidelines and Limitations
- Students may only work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. During school breaks, international students may work up to 40 hours per week on-campus.
- All on-campus work is treated the same for the 20 hour per week limit; e.g., a teaching assistant working 15 hours per week can only work 5 additional hours per week in another on-campus job.
- On-campus employment includes work done as a teaching or research assistant as well as jobs in the school library, Adobe Lodge, IT department, and administrative offices.
- Employment is "incident to status," and requires RO/ARO approval.
- Students temporarily attending two institutions concurrently may work only on the campus of the institution that issued their SEVIS Form.
- A student may not engage in on-campus employment during the 60-day grace period following the completion of a course of study.

Authorization Process
After the documents are received, ISS will review your information and academic record. If eligible, ISS will provide you with a copy of the authorization form with the approval signature of an ISS Advisor. You may pick up the form after 2 business days of your request. You will then take the approved form to the Student Employment Office. Please note that the U.S. Department of State does not allow us to authorize more than 12 months of on-campus employment at a time. If eligible you will be authorized for a period not to exceed the end date of your DS-2019 or for a maximum of 12 months for degree seeking students.
