Reflections on My Study Abroad Experience:
As the only Santa Clara
student venturing off to Prague,
I was pretty nervous about stepping completely out of my comfort zone into a
new culture and surrounded by new people.
Instead of focusing on the fear that I was initially feeling, I decided
to take the experience as a challenge and an adventure. I knew that I was solely responsible for
myself and the type of experience I was going to be able to enjoy abroad. I had to remain open-minded, flexible,
spontaneous and constantly ready to participate in any new and exciting
escapades that come along. This was very
different than my usual structured and planned out self, but with these changes
I was able to more fully appreciate my time in the Czech Republic.
I chose
to study abroad in Prague
because I wanted to be in a place full of history that I knew little about, and
would therefore have much to learn.
Well, I did learn a lot, not just about the Czech Republic
and its complex culture, but also about myself.
I learned how to rely on myself and follow my impulses. If I felt like going down to the Charles Bridge and listening to a Czech jazz
trio play, then I would do just that. There was so much to explore in Prague. It opened my eyes to the rest of the world
and my ability to be a part of something bigger.
As part
of my program, I was given the opportunity of studying at an international film
school (FAMU). Being a communication
major, this was a great way for me to spend time focusing solely on film
studies. Many study abroad programs allow
you the unique experience to focus on a subject that you are either majoring in
or just interested in learning more about and gain a different perspective on
it.
Studying
abroad is one of the most amazing adventures I have participated in and I wouldn’t
trade my experience for anything in the world.
