Reflections on my Study Abroad Experience

When I was trying to choose where I wanted to study abroad, I came to the conclusion that I needed to go somewhere that I might never have a chance of going to again. I also really wanted to step away from the Santa Clara bubble and experience an entirely new culture. The last thing I wanted was a developing political, economic, and social situation. These are the reasons I chose to go to Cape Town, South Africa.

The challenges offered by this 1st world economy with 3rd world living conditions were immense. Ten years after democracy and the end of apartheid, race relations remain a main issue of discussion. I was able to interact with people from so many diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. Everyday in the paper major historical things were occurring. The government and the people there are working hard to alleviate poverty and disease, especially AIDS.

I was able to go to school in the morning, taking classes with South Africans as well as students from many other African countries. Two days a week in the afternoon, I worked in a children’s home and was able to witness first hand the problems that plague the country but also the beauty of its people.

When I wasn’t in Cape Town, I was exploring the vast beauty that is Africa. Hiking mountains and swimming at the beach, going on safari or rafting down a river. I would recommend South Africa to anyone interested in going because it has something for everyone. It has a rich history that is constantly evolving and offers you a chance to be a part of it. Coming from Santa Clara University, I was intrigued by the vast volunteer opportunities to practice social justice. The beauty and vibrant lifestyle of Cape Town’s residents were perfect for a college student. I will always remember my five months in Cape Town as the greatest in my life. I am already making my plans for a return trip as soon as possible.
