Alexa Kempis '10International Ambassador---What were the deciding factors in choosing your study abroad program-location?--- I have always known that I wanted to study abroad in Europe,
so I limited my list of potential countries by language. I took
Spanish all throughout high school, in addition to a course here at
SCU, but I wanted to attempt to learn a new language. Eventually, I
chose to study in Italy, because I have always delighted in Italian
culture and food. I chose to study in Rome because of its rich history
and architectural beauty. The JFRC program truly stood out to me
because it offered a completely different experience from the typical
home stay. I have lived in the Bay Area for my entire life, so I knew
studying abroad would be a big step for me. Therefore, I selected a
dorm environment in an American university with other American students
in order to ease my transition into this foreign country.
---What have you learned from your study abroad
experiences that have contributed to your personal, vocational, or
academic growth?--- First and foremost, I have learned to be more independent. I can
also say that I am more well-rounded and have a transformed outlook on
life. Having traveled throughout Europe, I was able to indulge in
various cultures that have perpetually altered my once-narrow outlook
on life. I have taken back with me an experience from every culture and
have allowed each to take part in shaping my life.
Studying abroad has also opened up more doors for me; I have
networked with others overseas and am now interested in working abroad
after graduation. The experiences I have had are both relevant and
applicable to my education here at SCU.
---What advises, recommendations would you give to
prospective study abroad students? In retrospect, how would you prepare
differently to maximize the study abroad experience?--- I would greatly encourage all students to participate in a study
abroad program, whether it be a month-long program in the summer or a
year-long program. Studying abroad is greatly enriching on
an academic and on a more personal level as well. I would remind
students to keep an open mind! Just observe the culture. Learn from the
locals. Try to blend in with them and immerse yourself as much as
possible. Strike up conversations at the local cafe, and just practice
the language whenever you get the chance. |
