I wanted to study in an English speaking country because of my English major. I also was unfamiliar with Australian history, as it was a country I had known little about prior to studying here.

I've learned that "starting over" again from scratch is a terrifying task, but totally worthwhile once you get the hang of it. At first it was difficult to meet new friends, imbed yourself in the Australian culture, and learn to look right when crossing the road (and not left). But you realize that all the other American students are in the same situation. The Australian's just opened their arms to all of us frightened Americans.
The Universities grading system was something I was unfamiliar with. It's level of difficulty helped me push myself academically in all of my tutorials. I learned that writing a basic essay is not suitable, and one can write at a more scholarly level.

Don't stay caught up in your dorm room or apartment.  If a friend invites you on an exciting adventure somewhere, never turn it down. Oftentimes, it will be one of the best memories of your entire trip. Whether it be going to a soccer game, bushwalking, skydiving, or merely playing board games in the common room of the dorm.
