Alumni Update: Betsy Lehman
University Name, Year Graduated: John Carroll University '04 Current Work / Volunteer position: I'm getting ready to head on out to South America in three weeks. I still don't have all of the details pinned down, (but then, do we ever?) but I'm going to be volunteering with the Humility of Mary volunteer corps in Chile. The HM nuns are an amazing group of women who are extremely progressive, open minded, and dedicated to serving the poor and women. I'll be working in a city called Chillan, helping out at local cooperative. Women from Chillan who come to the cooperative are generally single mothers who need to learn a skill or take classes to begin to support themselves and their families. They make artesania, belly dance (Wheee!), and learn relaxation techniques, among other things. The focus is on the health of the woman -mind, body, and spirit- so that women who are frequently overworked can learn to take care of and nurture themselves, so they will better be able to nurture those in their lives.
