Alumni Update: Chrissy Lemmon
Current Work / Volunteer position: Good Shepherd Volunteer, 2 years, Leon, Mexico Update: After graduation I decided to continue following my heart back to Latin America, so I joined up as a volunteer with the Good Shepherd Volunteer program. With the understanding that women and children are severely affected by poverty and oppression, their mission is that of reconciliation; to acompany women and children in the process of empowerment and human dignity. I (along with another Casa alum, Joyana....or as she is called here, Ana Alegria) will be volunteering in Leon in the areas of women's human rights/women's empowerment and fair trade. As of yet we have participated in a women´s empowerment group that takes place every week, we have started English classes for the younger grades, and we are participating in the fair trade uniform project that is taking place in Leon. Women in the sewing group at the school here are making uniforms (specifically sweaters and sweat suits) that will be sold through the Good Shepherd´s (soon-to-be certified) fair trade project, "Handcrafting Justice" (www.gweworld.org). It is very exciting to be here working with women, getting to know the children and their families, speaking spanish, eating new foods, and learning about the unique struggles of another Latin American country. "A human being's greatest self-realization comes from her revolutionary activity."
