Salvadoran Literature (INTL 198)

5 upper-division quarter units

Instructor: Maria Ester Chamorro

Language of Instruction: Spanish.

Introduction: This course will provide Jesuit exchange students a literary and linguistic dimension that will complement their knowledge of the Salvadoran reality that students will obtain during their 15 week continued stay in our country. Furthermore, this course will motivate students in their efforts to perfect their mastery of the Spanish language.

Objectives:

General: That foreign students will acquire knowledge of several Salvadoran writers and critically read several outstanding works that demonstrate the real-life problems in Salvadoran social culture.

Specifics: That the students:
1. Recognize and analyze within the works read the literary characteristics that are part of our reality, like the Salvadoran identity, social inequality, the role and condition of women in society, inter-family and social violence, etc.
2. Creatively contribute they reflections around these problems and around their experiences with other literary works.
3. Deepen their experience with the Salvadoran reality.
4. Better their capacity to express in an oral and written manner in the Spanish language, by means of analysis of the distinct texts.
5. Know and engage in a dialogue with some important Salvadorans of national literature.

Content:

1. The Salvadoran Identity : Salarrué. Cuentos de Barro. Introduction to the theme.
a. Linguistic characteristics from the texts.
b. Discussion of the theme.
c. Contributes to the creativity of the student.
2. The condition of the woman: Alegría, Claribel, Flakoll, Darwin. Cenizas of Izalco.
Round table discussing the theme.
a. Discussion
b. Linguistic analysis of the texts
c. Contribute to the creativity of the student
3. Injustice, torture, imprisonment.

-Argueta. A day in the life
4. The inter-family and social: Shields. Cuentos Sucios.
5. Death and life en El Salvador: Galindo. La noche del dragon.

Methodology:

It will be required that students read the assigned texts, participate en the thematic discussion, and contribute for each book an analysis essay. Upon finishing the class the student will be asked to present an comparative, analytic, and evaluative essay using the distinct themes/authors/books.
