Alumni Update: Kristen WaresCasa Spring 2004 September 2005: I graduated from Fordham in May 2005 and have been living in the Bronx and working for Women In Need since then. Women In Need (WIN) is a nonprofit in New York that offers housing and other social services to women and their families in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. We serve about 2,000 clients daily and operate 8 shelters, two substance abuse clinics, supportive housing for women who have overcome domestic abuse or aged out of foster care, preventive services for women with HIV or AIDS, or have a history of domestic abuse, a housing help program to help women organize against eviction and find affordable housing, and we offer many services for children. At WIN, I coordinate the volunteers at our various sites and I run a relatively small aftercare program called Family Friends for approximately 50 women, helping them stay on their feet for their first two years after leaving one of our programs. It’s definitely a challenge, but I especially enjoy my work with the ladies in my program and the privilege of learning about life in New York City from their perspective.
