Alumni Update: Kristen WaresCasa Spring 2004 September 2005: I graduated from Fordham in May 2005 and have been living in the Bronx and working for Women In Need since then. Women In Need (WIN) is a nonprofit in New York that offers housing and other social services to women and their families in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. We serve about 2,000 clients daily and operate 8 shelters, two substance abuse clinics, supportive housing for women who have overcome domestic abuse or aged out of foster care, preventive services for women with HIV or AIDS, or have a history of domestic abuse, a housing help program to help women organize against eviction and find affordable housing, and we offer many services for children. At WIN, I coordinate the volunteers at our various sites and I run a relatively small aftercare program called Family Friends for approximately 50 women, helping them stay on their feet for their first two years after leaving one of our programs. It’s definitely a challenge, but I especially enjoy my work with the ladies in my program and the privilege of learning about life in New York City from their perspective. I’m still missing El Salvador and all my friends there quite a lot, but luckily, still get to practice my Spanish a little at work. Feel free to contact me at kristen.wares@gmail.com
