Challenging and Enlighteningby Dennis and Maryanne Fisher As the parents of a daughter, Megan, who participated in the Casa program in the Spring Semester of 2004, we were delighted with Megan's experience and our visit at Easter time. We had the usual apprehensions about a child going overseas to study abroad and if we didn't know a good bit about El Salvador there might have been more reluctance on our part. From our point of view, Megan's classes were challenging, enlightening and practical. She learned and now speaks Spanish which she could not do before her semester in El Salvador. But the best part of her experience was her contact with the Salvadoran people. The people, no matter their economic status, were welcoming and hospitable people. They shared what they had, in addition to themselves, with the college students. It is great to have Meg home, but what a life altering experience for her. We visited Meg at Easter time and had a wonderful experience. We visited her praxis work sites, the University, and met some of her teachers, friends and other Casa students. We felt safe and welcomed by the people we met. The bus system, although not environmentally healthy, was efficient and inexpensive. We were glad we did not rent a car. Taxis also worked well in a pinch. We would encourage any parent who can to visit and share their child's experience. The Romero sites are spiritually moving and touching. He does live in the Salvadoran people. Feel free to contact us if we can answer any questions: |
