Message to Faculty

Dear Colleagues:
Interest in international study, scholarship, and non-class immersion experiences has reached an all time high at Santa Clara. A great deal of thanks is owed department chairs, faculty, and staff for encouraging students to include an international immersion in their academic experience. We are writing to inform you of some important changes contained in the new bulletin affecting study abroad. The Board of Trustees and the Provost have made a strong statement of support for international education by permitting all SCU financial aid and scholarships to be used at over 100 approved overseas locations. In addition, the cost of most study abroad has become comparable to the quarter tuition and room & board cost on the Santa Clara campus.
Study abroad academic policies have also been made more consistent with on campus regulations. In order to avoid issues with academic credit it is crucial that those who advise undergraduates understand that students should only enroll in overseas programs affiliated with SCU. Students who participate in non-affiliated programs are subject to transfer credit limits of 10 units of elective credit and are not eligible for SCU aid or scholarships. Faculty who refer students to non-affiliated programs may be inadvertently impeding their progress towards graduation.
A list of affiliated programs is available on the International Programs webpage (www.scu.edu/studyabroad). Please share this information with those who advise undergraduates in your department. Feel free to contact Barbara Colyar or Vidalino Staley Raatior at 408-554-6940 with any questions.
Overseas program development, risk management, and other policies are established by the Provost. Faculty interested in developing an overseas experience or teaching abroad should consult the links below for current program development and administration policies.
Thank you,
