Types of Study Abroad Programs

Santa Clara offers over 100 study abroad program-locations in 50 countries where students can study and receive Santa Clara credits and grades to fulfill graduation requirements. These program locations are either operated directly by Santa Clara University (SCU-Operated), in reciprocal exchange agreements with other universities (Direct Exchanges), and affiliated with third party program providers (Affiliated).

  • iconDirect Exchange Programs

Santa Clara has reciprocal exchange relationships with a number of international universities.  Participants can fulfill major, minor, core, and other graduation requirements, eligible to apply 100% of their SCU financial aid towards tuition and program fees, maintain their enrollment status at SCU while abroad, and receive the same quality advising services at SCU. Direct Exchange Programs offer the best type of full immersion experience. Highly recommended for students who wish to improve their language skills, experience studying with local students while only paying SCU tuition.
    The Exchanges include:
    • Australia - Australian Catholic University
    • Canada - Simon Fraser University
    • Chile - Universidad Alberto Hurtado
    • France - Universite Catholique de Lille
    • Italy - Universita degli Studi di Firenze
    • Japan - Sophia University, University of Sacred Heart
    • Mexico - Universidad Iberoamericana Puebla
    • Philippines - Ateneo de Manila University
    • Spain - Universidad de Deusto
    • Sweden - Lund University
These direct exchanges allow a higher level of direct immersion and independence, as our students usually swap places with a student from one of our exchange schools. Students from the exchange university come to SCU, while our students enroll for a year or a semester overseas directly into the host university. Participation in an exchange program requires a higher level of language proficiency in most of the exchange schools. Search Programs
  • iconSCU-Operated Programs

Santa Clara University operates a growing number of our own programs abroad. Participants can fulfill major, minor, core, and other graduation requirements, eligible to apply 100% of their SCU financial aid towards tuition and program fees, maintain their enrollment status at SCU while abroad, and receive the same quality advising services at SCU.These SCU-led programs allow you to enjoy the same quality education from Santa Clara faculty members that you would experience here on the SCU home campus, and study alongside other SCU students in locations around the world including:

These programs usually have a higher degree of community-building with other Santa Clara students as they usually live and travel together in study centers, local university dorms, or research centers. Search Programs

  • iconAffiliated Programs

Santa Clara affiliates with a number of study abroad organizations and universities that offer a variety of programs around the world. These affiliated program providers include:
    • Arcadia University (Arcadia)
    • Boston University (BU)
    • Council for International Educational Exchanges (CIEE)
    • Danish Institute for Study Abroad (DIS)
    • Duke University (Duke)
    • Institute for International Education of Students (IES)
    • Loyola University Chicago (Loyola)
    • School for Field Studies (SFS)
    • Syracuse University (Syracuse)
Affiliated program options usually include two models of program experiences: 1) “Island Programs” involve placing American study abroad students into Study Centers overseas and teaching them a variety of courses in the American system. Usually there are no local students taking the courses offered in these study centers so students the immersion experiences happen outside of the classroom in homestays or social settings. Some providers do enable students to take 1-2 courses in local universities. 2) “Direct Enroll Programs” place American students directly into local universities. Participants will generally have the entire university's course offerings. Search Programs.

Non-Approved Programs
Participating in any non-affiliated programs is subject to limits on transfer credit and the residency requirement and may result in a loss of academic credit--see the SCU Bulletin for details. Any student taking part in a non-affiliated programs must withdraw from the University and may not use their SCU financial aid towards their costs.

If you wish to discuss a non-affiliated study abroad program, you will need to work with the Drahmann Center for credit transfer protocol.
