BorderLinks: Semester in the Borderlands

Program location:
BorderLinks is a program which studies the U.S. Mexican border. Roughly half of the semester is spent in Tucson, Arizona, and the other half in Nogales, Mexico.

Program description:
On this semester program, people from the North and South come together to explore global issues with all their complexities in the stark reality of the border environment. BorderLinks offers a firsthand immersion experience for anyone interested in this dynamic conversation. On this program you will learn about the issues, culture, economics, and lives of people along the US-Mexican border.

The courses offered in this program include History of Mexico, Peace and Justice Studies, Liberation Theology, Culture of the Borderlands, and Conversational Spanish (intermediate & advanced).

BorderLinks has two campuses, one in Tucson, adjacent to the University of Arizona, and the other in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. Roughly half of the semester is spent in Tucson and the other half in Mexico, addressing issues of border life. While in Tucson students are housed in a residential home, while during the time in Nogales, students spend four weeks living with local families and participating in life in the colonias or neighborhoods. In Nogales the program revolves around life at the BorderLinks Community Center called "Casa de la Misericordia" (House of Mercy). There are also two travel seminars which take the students east and west along the border to other cities such as El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez and Agua Prieta in Mexico.
