Program Options

Santa Clara offers 167 locations in over 40 countries  in which students can fulfill major, minor, core, and other graduation requirements, use 100% of their SCU financial aid, while maintaining their enrollment status. These approved programs include the following 3 types:
  • iconSCU-Operated Programs

Santa Clara University operates a growing number of our own programs abroad. These SCU-led programs allow you to enjoy the same quality education from Santa Clara faculty members that you would experience here on the SCU home campus, and study alongside other SCU students in locations around the world. These programs usually have a higher degree of community-building with other Santa Clara students as they usually live and travel together in study centers, local university dorms, or research centers.

  • iconDirect Exchange Programs

Santa Clara has reciprocal exchange relationships with a number of international universities in ten countries. These direct exchanges allow a higher level of direct immersion and independence, as our students usually swap places with a student from one of our exchange schools. Students from the exchange university come to SCU, while our students enroll for a year or a semester overseas directly into the host university. Participation in an exchange program requires a higher level of language proficiency in most of the exchange schools.
  • iconAffiliated Programs

To provide a diversity of program options around the world, Santa Clara affiliates with a number of study abroad program providers and universities. Affiliated program options usually include two types of models: (1) “island programs” essentially involve placing American students into Study Centers overseas and teach them a variety of courses in the American system; (2) “direct enroll programs” place American students into local universities. Generally, affiliated programs offer study options around the world with a variety of different language prerequisites, housing arrangements, and course offerings.

Special Note

Non-Affiliated Programs

Participating in any non-affiliated programs is subject to limits on transfer credit and the residency requirement and may result in a loss of academic credit--see the SCU Bulletin for details. Any student taking part in a non-affiliated programs must withdraw from the University and may not use their SCU financial aid towards their costs.

If you wish to discuss a non-affiliated study abroad program, you will need to work with the Drahmann Center for credit transfer protocol.
