Browse all programsAsia : Thailand : Khon KaenStudents and take intensive Thai language and public health courses at the CIEE Study Center located at Khon Kaen University (KKU). Working in groups, students complete a comprehensive community health project and a report that includes planning, diagnostic tools, research and evaluation. Recommended for pre-med students. Instruction is in English and Thai.
Asia : Thailand : Khon KaenStudents take intensive Thai language in addition to development and environmental courses at the CIEE Study Center located at Khon Kaen University (KKU). Working in groups, students engage in field study and directed research on development and social justice issues. Instruction is in English and Thai.
Asia : Tibet : DharamsalaEmory University and its partner, the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics (IBD), weave together rigorous academic study, field research, cultural immersion, and contemplative practice in order to provide a unique semester-long program for students interested in both India and Tibet. One class is taught by the Dalai Lama. During the semester, students study the Tibetan language and complete a research project on a topic of interest to them in Tibetan Studies. Students are emersed into the culture by living on campus with a Tibetan roommate and with host families.
Africa : Tunisia : TunisThis immersive study abroad program gives students the chance to study Arabic while examining issues of identity, culture, and globalization in a multicultural context
Europe : Turkey : IstanbulStudents study the Turkish language and can study a host of subjects, such as archaeology, history, art, philosophy, business, science and international relations. Instruction takes places at Koc University. A Turkish language course is required. Instruction is in English.
Latin America : Turks and Caicos Islands : Turks & CaicosThe School for Field Studies (SFS) Turks & Caicos: Marine Resource Management Studies Semester program provides students with the opportunity to conduct field research that is helps to provide the local government, community, and tourism developers with recommendations that will help sustain the economic, social, and ecological stability of South Caicos. Snorkeling and SCUBA diving in waters surrounding South Caicos, students in this semester study abroad program in the Turks and Caicos learn field research techniques to identify a wide range of marine organisms and habitats, and learn about marine ecology and coastal ecosystems. Students grapple with the challenges of balancing the economic needs of the fishing community with fisheries management and analyze the costs and benefits of potential new fisheries. Assessing the pros and cons of resource management and habitat conservation options, and their associated social and economic implications, brings students face-to-face with the real-life dilemmas for governmental regulators and the residents of South Caicos.
Africa : Uganda : GuluThis program examines the origins of the conflict in northern Uganda; issues of identity construction in the Ugandan context; and ongoing efforts by Ugandans to advance peace, community building, and reconciliation.
Middle East : United Arab Emirates : SharjahStudents enroll directly in the American University of Sharjah, do intensive language study and take courses in Middle Eastern and Gulf studies. Students can take courses in social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, business, engineering, and architecture. Students are required to take one Arabic language course. Courses are taught in English.
Africa : Burkina Faso : OuagadougouThe Santa Clara University Fall Semester Study Abroad/Immersion in Burkina Faso is a study abroad program for students interested in combining academic work on the development challenges of West Africa with immersion and community-based learning experiences in public libraries in small towns and villages in rural areas. Students spend the first six weeks of the program in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, the second six weeks in a rural village in southwestern Burkina Faso, a week of travel in the region, and a final two weeks back in Ouagadougou. During the program, students intern in a village community library and create and publish two books of photography about village life in Burkina Faso.
