    The Ignatian Center for Jesuit Education, in partnership with the Environmental Studies Institute and the Office of Sustainability, introduces The Sustainability Initiative at Santa Clara.  This Initiative responds to the challenge of President Michael Engh, S.J.’s 2009 inaugural address  to deepen and renew Santa Clara University's commitment to sustainability and environmental justice and to become a major center of innovative practice, study, and debate around issues of sustainability.

    Santa Clara University’s School of Engineering has a long history of involvement in sustainable energy studies. New courses are being developed each quarter, a graduate certificate in renewable energy and a multi-disciplinary master’s degree in energy and sustainability are in the works, and popular graduate-level Emerging Topics short courses are also being offered to train Silicon Valley’s professionals to meet the changing demands in energy and to fulfill a pressing need in the rapidly growing renewable energy market in our Valley and in the world.

    The Solar Decathlon is a biennial competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy uniting twenty teams of college students to design, construct, and operate the most energy efficient, functional, and attractive solar-powered home. The Santa Clara University Solar Decathlon team, composed of undergraduates in the School of Engineering, the School of Business, and the College of Arts and Sciences, design, build, and operate a completely solar-powered home.
