It's pretty difficult to spend a day on campus without noticing something the University is doing to reduce energy consumption and increase its reliance on renewable energy. Students, faculty, and staff, more often than not, pass by without giving these initiatives a second thought. Though Chris Watt, Director of Utilities and Contract Maintenance, claims his last name had nothing to do with spurring him into a career dealing with energy, he has thought about the University's energy consumption on a daily basis for 25 years.

Michael Engh, S.J., unplugs his phone charger in the morning so it doesn't waste energy during the day. He tries to drive a Prius whenever he travels in the area, and his office on campus uses recycled paper whenever possible. It is all part of the daily routine for Santa Clara University's Jesuit president.

Joe Sugg has been a leader in creating a more sustainable campus. Joe oversees buildings management and construction, grounds management, energy use, waste management and purchasing policy. When asked how he came to view sustainability as a core Santa Clara value, Joe identified two personal triggers. First, he described how sustainability is more than being "green" it's about social justice and viable economics. Second, Joe learned to see sustainability as a good business practice.
