Sustainability Summer Series

The Sustainability Summer Series is a chance to learn more about SCU’s sustainability programs. Each session is 1-hour on Wednesdays throughout the summer and involves a behind-the-scenes view of a specific campus initiative. Sessions may explore initiatives such as SCU’s waste stream, landscaping/water, housing & residence life, campus recreation, the Forge Garden, dining services, and renewable energy initiatives.


7/30 Energy & Climate

With Joe Sugg, 2-3 pm
Learn about SCU's energy efficiency programs and our plans for reaching carbon neutrality by the end of 2015 from Joe Sugg, Assistant Vice President of University Operations. You'll hear about the campus' micro-grid, exterior lighting upgrade, and can get up-close-and-personal to our rooftop solar. This session is limited to 15 participants.

8/06 Harvest at the Forge Garden

With Rose Madden, 10-11 am
Receive a brief tour of the Forge Garden, pick vegetables for the farm stand, and experience the sampling, washing/ prepping, and the behind-the-scenes insight into a working urban garden.

8/13 Waste Diversion

With Chris Young and Eugenio Ramirez, 10-11am
Ever wonder where your recycling, compostables, and landfill items go? Tour the Facilities Yard and see how SCU processes roughly 5 tons a day. Get your questions answered by participating in a hands-on waste characterization (optional, but encouraged!).

8/20 Campus Recreation

With Janice DeMonsi, 10-11 am 
Discover how Campus Recreation, led by Director of Campus Recreation Janice DeMonsi, is leading the way in implementing sustainability in the athletics and recreation sector. You'll learn about their zero-waste goal, Terracycle brigades, the "Powered by Sweat" program, and the pilot of the latest carbon offset initiative, the Hoofprint Challenge.

Each box includes a selection of local, organic, seasonal vegetables. You can subscribe to receive a full (10-12 items) or half (5-6 items) box once, or as often as you like.
