When I think about sustainability, I think about the different social, environmental, and economic issues associated with the concept. In order to be sustainable, one must conserve natural resources. Also, I think the need for social justice is an important factor. A society cannot be sustainable if it is treating people inhumanely – denying basic human rights, etc.

The aspects of sustainability that I am most interested in are the process of relearning and reteaching how to live conservatively in that we do not need to consume as much as we do, as well as lowering our waste production.

The other main aspect I am interested in is to find alternative energies. No matter how much we change, we will never stop needing to produce usable energy. Therefore, we must place great importance on developing, teaching and implementing ways to produce energy that aren’t damaging to our environment.

When I hear the word “sustainability” I think of conservation. Sustainability is a means of conserving materials and natural resources so that life and the environment can still survive. I consider recycling, monitoring the use of water and materials, preventing pollution, and reducing our carbon footprint different methods of living sustainably. It is the way that we can ensure that future generations will also have the necessary resources for survival.

My dictionary definition of sustainability is a way of living in harmony with both the natural world and the people who inhabit it. This means that the practices and attitudes toward everyday life do not leave an impact on the environment.

To me, sustainability incorporates aspects of efficiency, responsibility, and independence fused into one concept which can be applied to various situations. I am perhaps most enthralled by the prospect of living with negligible impact and how personal choice to live a purer life not tainted by environmentally degrading practices can shape and drive change within people and within communities. I am most interested in how people relate to and interact with their environments from biological as well as anthropological perspectives.

The idea of the ripple effect of teaching one person who will in turn inspire others is also a fascinating phenomenon to me. Perhaps I most enjoy teaching others and learning from them as well, as I have the desire to help others understand why they should/need to reduce their impacts as well as to help them achieve these goals through education and creativity that will hopefully fuel a lifelong passion.
