Sustainable Employment Practices

Santa Clara recognizes that the health, well-being, and fair treatment of its employees are essential to sustainability within the workplace.
  • iconFair Wages

Following the city of San Jose Living Wage Policy, SCU assures that all its employees receive a wage that enables them to not live in poverty. The policy mandates that "persons doing work on, for or on behalf of the City should be paid a living wage, be provided with or able to afford health insurance, have reasonable time off, not be subject to lay off merely because the city changes contractors and should work in an environment of labor peace."
  • iconPaid Family Leave Insurance

Santa Clara provides Paid Family Leave Insurance which provides wage replacement to those on an approved leave of absence to care a spouse, registered domestic partner, child, or parents with a serious health condition, or to bond with a newborn within the first year of life or a child within the first year following adoption or foster care placement.

  • iconOn-Site Childcare

Kids on Campus, an on-site child care facility, provides faculty, staff, students and, when space permits, alumni a safe and enjoyable place for their children during business hours.

  • iconMedical & Dental Benefits

SCU offers benefits that include a choice of medical plan options along with a dental care program. Registered Domestic Spouses are covered under the eligible dependent section of the benefits plan.
  • iconEmployee Satisfaction

Santa Clara University has consistently ranked as one of the "Best Places to Work in the Bay Area." In 2007, SCU again received this honor, ranking #11 in the "big companies" category, which is 501 to 3,000 employees. The evaluative survey used to conduct this assessment went directly to 161,000 employees and asked them to evaluate their workplace satisfaction. 37 key questions inquired about management practices and policies, benefit offerings, and how happy they were with the work climate and culture.

Santa Clara Human Resources department is currently conducting a similar climate assessment survey that will be implemented in Spring 2009 and repeated every 1-2 years thereafter.

  • iconWhistleblower Policy

Employees who feel that they are denied appropriate working conditions can use EthicsPoint, a simple risk-free way to anonymously and confidentially report activities that may involve criminal, unethical, or otherwise inappropriate behavior in violation of the university's policies.
  • iconNon-Discrimination Policy

Santa Clara's policy, Prevention of Unlawful Harassment and Discrimination, protects all members of the campus community from harassment and/or discrimination, and from retaliation against any person who in good faith reports, complains of, files or pursues a complaint about, or requests assistance with respect to harassment or discrimination, or against any person who provides evidence as a witness in connection with a claim of harassment or discrimination.
  • iconConflict Resolution

Faculty, staff, and student problems may be addressed through the Human Resources' Conflict Resolution Policy wherein individuals may file complaints in hope of resolving conflicts.
  • iconEmployee Counseling

Employees may take advantage of the United Behavioral Health - Employee Assistance Plan (EAP). The EAP is a short-term counseling and referrals program, paid for by the university, to help employees deal with various issues.
