I'm an off-campus student. What are the rules for Santa Clara's curbside recycling program?

Posted on Friday, Apr. 29, 2011

Luckily, the rules for off-campus recycling are relatively similar to the ones on-campus; both programs are single-stream, meaning you don't have to sort out all the different types of recyclables. In your blue curbside recycling bins, you can recycle:

  • Newspapers
  • Mixed paper
  • Corrugated cardboard (broken down/flattened)
  • Glass bottles & jars
  • Aluminum & tin cans
  • Discharged metal spray paint cans
  • Steel & other kitchen scrap metals
  • Plastics #1-7 EXCEPT #6

You can also bundle your plastic grocery, produce, dry cleaning, and bread bags inside a clear plastic bag and put these in the recycling bin as well (no more piles of Safeway bags in your cabinets!) However, investing in a reusable grocery or produce bag saves you the hassle of dealing with these bags in the first place. Put motor oil in small screw-top containers, motor oil filters & CFL's in separate ziplock plastic bags, and set these to the side of the blue bin.

If you have any questions, you can visit the recycling section of Santa Clara's site, or call (408) 970-5100/(408) 615-2063.
