Campus Recreation created the Hoofprint Challenge in an effort to help offset carbon emissions from club sports 2012-2013 game travel. Participation and commitment will help achieve theuniversity goal of campus climate neutrality by end of the year 2015.
The Hoofprint Challenge has four categories: Energy Saving, Waste Reduction, Water Conservation, and Miscellaneous Actions. Within each category, there is a checklist of pledges that encourage modifying your behavior towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Behavior change is no easy task, but with these insider tips you can take action!
Many Broncos can get sweaty everyday-- traveling to and from class and work, after a hard workout, or being active in the community and outdoors. Reduce your shower time by a few minutes here and there to be a champion in the Water Conservation category. This simple act is a great way to conserve water and squeeze in a few extra minutes to your day!
With fall season in full swing, hot chocolate, cider, pumpkin spiced lattes, etc. are a delicious idea. Enjoy these holiday treats to your heart’s content, but be sure to do so from a reusable mug! The single-use cups these drinks are served in add up fast. By ditching the paper cups you’ll make huge headway on the challenge AND get to show off your cute mug! Waste Reduction actions will bring the Broncos that much closer to climate neutrality.
For those with an active or busy lifestyle, the energy bar’s convenience makes it a staple part of a weekday diet. Rather than tossing the daily wrapper in the landfill waste bin, recycle your wrappers! The Terracycle bins located in the lobby at Malley will gladly take your wrappers. Another Terracycle bin, specifically for any hard-to-recycle beauty products that might otherwise end up in landfill, is located in the Center for Sustainability in Varsi Hall.
There are many other miscellaneous actions that can be taken to help dominate in the Hoofprint Challenge. Just a short walk towards the edge of campus is the beautiful Forge Garden. Respect our local community and volunteer for just one hour--it will make a difference. You will help us achieve our goal to be climate neutral and maybe even get to munch on some yummy vegetables!
We hope you find these tips handy as you make your way through the Hoofprint Challenge. These are just a few examples of ways you can make sure to achieve your pledge!
