The “CourseAvail” site ( www.scu.edu/CourseAvail ) provides an effective way to see courses offered each quarter, with an accurate and up-to-date listing of Undergraduate Core Curriculum attributes for both the old Core and Core 2009. Instructors and locations are visible as well. Selecting the section number for the course opens a page displaying the Course Description, Class Notes, Units, and other data.

A print option allows viewers to produce a printable .pdf document of all courses for a particular quarter (e.g., fall 2009) or of a particular selection of courses for that quarter.

This online Course Listing/Course Schedule will enhance thoughtful course selection among our students and will assist faculty and advisors in their work with students. It will be particularly useful in the advising process for our new Core Curriculum for our incoming first year students. The site provides the information needed to support intentional learning and informed advising.

Kudos to Brian, Bill, Monica and the Registrar's office staff for this valuable tool.

New Interdisciplinary Majors

In response to concerns expressed in a Faculty Senate survey last spring, the Academic Affairs Committee approved a proposal from the Provost's Office to adopt a new schedule in which academic programs will undertake self studies every eight years. This schedule will be adjusted in some cases to reflect special issues such as coordination with specialized accreditation reviews.

This fall the Provost's Office and the Academic Affairs Committee will develop new guidelines for the next cycle of academic program reviews. The schedule for the next cycle will also be announced later this fall.

Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility

Santa Clara University was one of six universities to receive an Alfred P. Sloan Award for Faculty Career Flexibility from the American Council on Education in 2007-08. The $200,000 award is intended to promote flexible career paths and work-life balance for faculty.

Senior Vice Provost Don Dodson directs the award program with the assistance of a new Faculty Work-Life Advisory Group composed of Linda Kamas, chair (Economics), Laura Ellingson (Communication), and Eleanor Willemsen (Psychology). Pedro Hernandez-Ramos (Education), Edwin Maurer (Civil Engineering), and Chuck Powers (Sociology) also served as members in 2008-09, and several new members will be appointed this fall.

Some initiatives undertaken through the Sloan Award include:

A rich program of events and services will be offered in 2009-10 around the theme of faculty work-life balance. This program has been developed by the Faculty Work-Life Advisory Group and by Diane Dreher (English). It will include a public lecture, workshops, and community group lunches each quarter. Confidential coaching sessions around work-life balance may also be scheduled with a licensed therapist who can assist faculty with strategies for setting priorities, saying no, dealing with conflicts, and managing time. More information about these events and services will come from the Faculty Work-Life Advisory Group.

New policies on tenure clock extensions and flexible course scheduling were approved last year upon the recommendation of the Faculty Affairs Committee. The committee is continuing to develop (1) a modified duties policy associated with various kinds of leaves and (2) a new faculty appointment model which would clarify policies and procedures related to different categories of faculty appointment, including renewable term lecturers.

Assistant Vice Provost Ed Ryan developed a new Faculty Resources Website (www.scu.edu/provost/facultyresources). Please check out this website for resources that support teaching and scholarship, the community of scholars, and work life balance.

Bill Sundstrom, Associate Provost for Faculty Development, developed Career Flexibility and Work-Life Balance: A Toolkit for Chairs and Deans and offered several training sessions in September.

Linda Kamas and Laura Ellingson developed a new course on Vocation and Gender, which they taught for the first time in Spring 2009. This course is part of the Vocation pathway in the new Core Curriculum.

Kieran Sullivan (Psychology) and Laura Nichols (Sociology) are developing a work-life survey.

The Work-Life Advisory Group has been working with Human Resources and Kids on Campus to identify ways to make Kids on Campus more accessible to more faculty, particularly for infant care.

This has been a collaborative process involving faculty and staff throughout the university. Some highlights:

More than 70 faculty are serving on Faculty Core Committees.

In the last two years Faculty Core Committees have processed more than 600 requests for the approval of syllabi, Pathways, or Honoraria (some were “revise and resubmits”).

More than 350 courses have been approved. Approximately 70 honoraria for curriculum development and transformation have been approved, and nineteen Pathways have been approved.

More than twenty faculty participated last year in piloting innovative themed and sequenced courses in “Critical Thinking and Writing” and “Cultures and Ideas.” The pilot project included a successful assessment project focusing on student learning in relation to selected learning objectives. See the Office of Assessment website for the Assessment Reports. The reports have been shared with the Pilot faculty and will be discussed by the relevant departments.

Over the past two years we’ve offered ten summer workshops with more than 180 participants for Core Curriculum Development.

Partnerships with offices throughout the University have been invaluable. In addition to the Schools and the College, these have included the Drahmann Center, the Registrar’s Office, the Office of Marketing and Communication, the Admissions Office, the Housing Office, the Residential Learning Communities, the Ignatian Center, the Office of Student Life, and many others.

We have enrolled 1029 incoming first year students in Foundations courses for the new core; 62 more first year students will enroll during the final Orientation session.

Several aspects of the Core implementation process have involved significant changes. In addition to the change involved in the development of courses in a number of new Core areas (Experiential Learning for Social Justice; Civic Engagement; Science, Technology, and Society; Diversity; etc.), another change involved increased attention to learning goals and objectives in syllabi. Faculty Core Committees successfully developed learning objectives for each core area. These learning objectives are now included on all approved syllabi or on a related course website, and course assignments are aligned with learning objectives. We know that this approach will enhance teaching and learning, and will facilitate assessment of learning objectives. Although it is considered a “best practice” in higher education, it was not widely practiced at Santa Clara prior to Core implementation. We are grateful to the faculty throughout the University who have participated in this impressive effort.

Our success in implementing the Core has brought Santa Clara to the attention of a number of institutions who are also engaged in Core revision. Faculty and administrators from St. Mary’s College, Loyola Marymount University, and the University of San Diego have traveled to Santa Clara to consult with us; we have been invited to Boston College. We have been asked to speak about our implementation process twice at WASC conferences. We were asked to present our Core implementation process at both the AJCU Deans Conference and the AJCU Leadership Seminar. In addition, we have been contacted by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Carnegie will be discussing SCU’s Core and Pathways in a forthcoming book on liberal education in America’s Business Schools.

Colleagues at these institutions have been impressed with the way Santa Clara’s Core reflects the University’s commitment to global and local learning, intentional learning, and engaged learning for social justice. They’ve also been impressed with our focus on goals, objectives, and manageable, meaningful assessment. We want to thank the university community for their contributions to the Core curriculum implementation process.

WASC Update

Santa Clara hosts a re-accreditation site visit October 20 – 22, 2009. Our seven-member visiting team will be chaired by Fr. Stephen Sundborg, S.J., President of Seattle University. Other participants are Ronald K. Barrett, Professor of Psychology, Loyola Marymount University; Diane F. Halpern, Professor of Psychology, Claremont McKenna College; William M. Plater, Chancellor’s Professor, Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis; Rana Glasgal, Associate Vice Provost, Stanford University
Barbara Gross Davis, Assistant Vice Provost, University of California, Berkeley; and James Hyatt, Senior Vice President, University of South Florida. This is a strong and impressive team.

As part of the re-accreditation process we have submitted a “Capacity and Preparatory Report” to WASC. The report is posted on a password protected site accessible to members of the Santa Clara community. See www.scu.edu/wasc and select “Reports and Data.” Use your GroupWise username and password to enter the site.

During the site visit open meetings will be held at which faculty, staff, and students can talk with members of the visiting team. In addition, WASC will establish a confidential email site to allow individuals from the University community to communicate with the team regarding their experiences at Santa Clara. The team will also meet with selected groups of faculty, staff, students, and trustees.

The Capacity report contains Reflective Essays on the three themes selected by the University for analysis: Educating for Competence, Conscience, and Compassion; Supporting the Teaching Scholar Model; and Promoting a Community of Inclusive Excellence. Appendices and Data Tables provide additional information.

Members of the visiting team will return to Santa Clara in February 2011 for an Educational Effectiveness Review focusing primarily on student learning, the teaching and learning environment, and institutional learning.
