The September 9-15 CAPE Workshop Week started sooner than exptected for Charlene Davis, Amy Sibiga and Ted Biala. The trio were interviewed by KTVU-TV2's Maureen Naylor for a segment that appeared on the Thursday, September 9, 5 pm broadcast.

The CAPE participants, who attend the six-month program through a generous grant from the SCU Executive Development Center, represent a wide variety of ventures. KTVU featured Ted Biala for Biala-Meris Inc., Charlene Davis for Tablescape Magic/Tablescape Diva and Amy Sibiga for Megan's Living Well.

The 2010 CAPE cohort returns to the Santa Clara campus for Workshop Week September 9-15. This intensive portion of the CAPE program includes class modules each day from 8:30 am to 5:15 pm and speaker events in the evenings.

Melita Group executives provided the 2010 CAPE cohort with information on Human Resources and Employee Benefits services. Lisa McCormack, SPHR, Vice President of Client Services for the Melita Group led the lecture, which also featured her colleagues Jonna Schaff, SPHR?CA GPHR, Senior HR Consultant, and Greg St. Geme, Sr. Account Executive, Benefits Consultant.

The Melita Group is an HR professional services organization providing comprehensive HR and benefits consulting services to clients of all sizes.

About the speakers:

Lisa McCormack has over twenty years of HR generalist and management expertise. She has extensive experience in the high technology arena, working with large and small companies undergoing rapid growth and change.

Prior to joining The Melita Group in 2004, Ms. McCormack held the position of Vice President, HR for Lightspeed Semiconductor Corporation, a venture backed company in Sunnyvale, California where she led the HR function for the growing company and spearheaded HR initiatives across all disciplines such as employee relations, staffing, benefits, compensation, and training.

Ms. McCormack currently serves on the Board of Directors for Silicon Valley FACES and chairs the HR Committee. She also served on the Executive Coard of Directors for the Women's Recovery Association from 2001 to 2006 and chaired HR Committee. Additionally, she was been involved in corporate community involvement and non-profit efforts throughout her career.

Ms. McCormack holds a Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from San Jose State University and a certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).

Jonna Schaff is a certified HR professional with over 20 years of experience as a generalist, business partner, and HR leader. The majority of her experience is in small to mid?sized international technology companies facing challenges around their growth and changing business climate. Her areas of specialty are recruitment and selection, employee relations and performance management.

Ms. Schaff’s recent successes include consulting for non?profit agencies, small technology firms and her role as VP, HR at publicly?traded CDC Software, based in Atlanta, HR Director positions at privately?held Omneon and Velosel and HR management roles at Cadence Design Systems and Sherpa. In addition, she has provided professional resume consulting services for several years.

She has a special affinity for partnering with managers and executives to help them make and execute sound business decisions and has an interest in training managers so that they can become more effective. Ms. Schaff’s training and course development work includes Interviewing and Hiring Training, Recognizing the Importance of Culture and the Company Lifecycle, and Effective Employee Relations.

Ms. Schaff holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from UCLA and has completed the majority of the coursework towards a Master’s degree from Santa Clara University. She currently holds both the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and Global Professional in Human Resources (GPHR) certifications, and has recently earned the California certification. Because of her commitment to the HR profession, she has facilitated several semesters of
certification preparation classes through the local chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) and has developed and taught the “HR in Small Companies” class at San Jose State Professional Development.

Greg St. Geme has over twelve years of benefits consulting experience. Prior to joining The Melita Group in 2001, Greg worked in the Group Sales Division of
Genworth Financial, a subsidiary of GE Capital. Greg works with many emerging venture backed companies in Silicon Valley. His knowledge of the benefits marketplace and his understanding of the needs of growing companies make him an invaluable resource to his clients.

Greg holds a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. He has served on the Board of Directors for Community Gatepath as well as the Silicon Valley Association of Health Underwriters.

Katie Taromino, SVB Capital Venture Capital Group Director, Guest Lecturer for CAPE Weekend 2

Katie Taormino

Director, Venture Capital Group, SVB Capital

Katie Taormino is a director with SVB Capital’s Venture Capital Relationship Management team. Taormino is responsible for building strategic relationships with law firms and other service providers. In this role, she leverages the SVB Financial Group platform of products and services including commercial banking, private banking, funds, global markets as well as valuations and corporate equity management tracking.

Taormino has more than seven years of lending and relationship management experience focused on working with late-stage middle market companies and professional service firms. Prior to joining SVB in 2008, Taormino was a commercial lender with Comerica Bank where she was responsible for growing and maintaining a portfolio in its Peninsula Regional office.

A graduate of Santa Clara University, she holds a bachelor's degree in commerce with a major in finance and minors in international business and Spanish. She also serves on Santa Clara University's Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship Advisory Board.

CAPE On-Site Weekend 2 Panel Discussion Features Scott Barneson, Diane Frankel and Rob Meinhardt

The 2010 CAPE cohort returned to the SCU campus August 13-15 for weekend 2 of the six-month program. In addition to the rigorous curriculum, the group participated in an informative, interactive panel discussion with EMC's Scott Barneson, DLA Piper's Diane Frankel, and Dell KACE Co-Founder and CEO Rob Meinhardt. Panel moderator Dan Aguiar, Executive Director of Entrepreneurship Programs and Dean's Executive Professor of Entrepreneurship put together this interesting group and served as panel moderator.

Scott Barneson

Scott has spent the past 5 years at EMC and most recently moved to a business development role where he works exclusively with VMware. Previously Scott spent three years in EMC lonix where he was responsible for acquisitions and investments. In this role Scott was tasked with contributing to all phases of the acquisition including identification of candidates, evaluation of business & technology, business case creaton, M&A Committee approval, due diligence activities and organizational integration. He played a key role in the acquisition of Infra, Voyence, Configuresoft and FastScale and also led the first strategic investment made by Ionix. After two years in Hopkinton, Scott is back in the Bay Area and based in Santa Clara and Palo Alto.

Prior to joining EMC, Scott spent the majority of his career carrying a quota at a Fortune 500 company as well as a startup. Scott graduated from Santa Clara University with a BS in Operations and Management Information Systems. He lives in Saratoga with his wife, son, and chocolate lab.

Diane Frankle

Diane Holt Frankle is Partner and Chair of Public Company and Corporate Governance Practice of DLA Aper, Palo Alto. Diane concentrates in mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, disclosure, anti-takeover counseling, internal investigations, public offerings, venture capital financing, new company formation and executive compensation. Among her clients are publicly traded and privately held companies engaged in US and cross-border mergers, acquisitions and leveraged buyous. Ms. Frankle served as Chair of DLA Piper's Mergers and Acquisitions group for five years prior to her appointment as Chair of the Public Company and Corporate Governance group.

Rob Meinhardt

Co-Founder & CEO, Dell KACE
Prior to co-founding KACE, Rob Meinhardt worked for two years as a principal with R.B. Webber & Company (RBW), a strategic management consulting firm. During his tenure at R.B Webber, he worked on strategic marketing projects for startup and public technology companies such as Bordeware, Critical Path, Attensity, Avotus, Iteration Software and Kasenna. In addition, Meinhardt completed due diligence efforts in support of R.B. Webber's sister venture capital fund, TEFII.

Before joining R.B. Webber, Meinhardt served as Vice President of Marketing for AvantGo (formerly NASDAQ: AVGO, since acquired by Sybase). During his four years with the company, AvantGo's revenues grew from zero to nearly $30M on an annualized basis. Prior to AvantGo, Meinhardt served as a marketing advisor and occasional investor in several high technology companies including Sybase, Commerce One, Sagent, Persistence, Chiron, FedEx Ecommerce Division and others.

Australian Entrepreneur Michael Kyriacou Guest Speaker for CAPE Kickoff Weekend

Australian entrepreneur and investor Michael Kyriacou is the Chief Executive Officer at Great Big Enterprises, Inc., Co-Owner of ELA Security, and Executive Director and Owner of The Strattica Group.

A highly motivated and dynamic technology entrepreneur and investor, Michael received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, where he graduated with first class honors (top student), received the John Renner Medal for Leadership and Excellence in Engineering, was editor of the Engineering Society Newsletter and served as President of the University Engineering Society for two terms. He received a Master of Business and Technology degree with Strategy & Finance streams from the University of New South Wales and also received a post-graduate Certificate in Technology Entrepreneurship from Santa Clara University.
