Google and Microsoft Open Forums

The SCU task force is pleased to announce open
forums with the two leading vendors of externally hosted communication
solutions, Google and Microsoft.

The Google open forum is scheduled for Monday, February 13, 2012 from
1:30 to 3:30 PM. The forum will be held in Learning Commons 205.

The Microsoft open forum is scheduled for Thursday, February 16, 2012
from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. The forum will be held in Learning Commons 205.

The forums are open to the University’s faculty, staff and students.
Representatives from the vendors will be demonstrating major aspects of
their communication and collaboration solutions. The vendor
representatives will also field questions from the audience. Seating for
these forums is limited, so those wishing to attend are asked to reserve
a seat at http://www.scu.edu/is/communication/rsvp.cfm.

The 2012 CRA-W Grad Cohort Workshop

CRA-W is announcing the formation of the 2012 Grad Cohort for Women. Cohort activities will kick off with a workshop April 13-14, 2012 in Bellevue, WA, this year generously funded by Microsoft, along with significant support from Google as well as contributions from Yahoo!, IBM, and other contributors. This workshop is the cornerstone of CRA-W's efforts to increase the ranks of senior women in computing by building and mentoring nationwide communities of women during their graduate studies.

At the Grad Cohort Workshop, we will welcome new women graduate students in their first year of graduate school into the community of computing researchers and professionals by providing them with a broad range of strategies and role models. Strategies and mentoring for students in their second and third years of graduate school will also be provided.

All of the students will meet for two days with 10 to 15 senior computing researchers and professionals who will share pertinent information on graduate school survival skills, as well as more personal information and insights about their experiences. The rewards of a research career will be emphasized. The workshop will include a mix of formal presentations and informal discussions and social events. Through this workshop, students will be able to build mentoring relationships and develop peer networks that will form the basis for ongoing activities during their graduate careers.

Eligibility:
Women students in their first, second or third year of graduate school in computer science and computer engineering or a closely related field at a US or Canadian institution.

Travel expenses, meals and lodging will be provided for students chosen to participate in this program.

About their ventures:

Erik Fialho, Left Lane Sports: LeftLane Sports started in 2009 as the first Flash Sale website for sporting goods. The site launches limited-time sales on top Outdoor, Fitness, and Action Sports brands at up to 70% off retail prices. The site initially grew through word-of-mouth and quickly took off. In October 2010, we began a marketing push and since then, the site has been growing an average of 30% month/month. We recently received our first round of Angel Investment, giving us a multi-million dollar valuation. The opportunity to expand further with the new capital is extremely exciting, but being a Senior double major at SCU makes the challenge of running my own company that much more intense. I’m hopeful, though, that the difficulties will make the experience that much more rewarding.

Anthony Prieto, Bronco Student Services: Bronco Student Services is an organization entirely owned and operated by Santa Clara University alumni and students dedicated to providing needed services such as laundry, storage and food delivery to Broncos living both on and off campus. He is responsible for sourcing and identifying potential investment opportunities in the life sciences, high tech, and consumer product spaces. Andy is actively involved in the evaluation of businesses seeking seed/early stage financing. He enjoys working with promising entrepreneurs to help them develop investor-oriented pitch decks and presentations. Prior to joining The Angels Forum, Andy worked for Stryker Endoscopy. He received his MBA from Santa Clara University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Engineering from Oregon State University.

2011-2012 AbilityOne Network DESIGN CHALLENGE

The design challenge is a service learning opportunity for any college student or student team at the graduate or undergraduate level in a University Program that also enhances science, engineering and technology skills.

Students interested in participating in the AbilityOne Network Design Challenge must register for the competition. Final reports and supporting information (author agreement, photos, videos, etc.) will be uploaded through this website. Submission instructions will be sent to participants upon registration. Reports and supporting information must be uploaded to the website by the deadline; there are no exceptions.

The deadline for University students is Friday, April 20, 2012, 5pm EST. Participants must be registered online prior to the deadline to qualify. Please direct any questions or problems to the attention of Stephanie Hurd at shurd@nish.org or 571-226-4527.

Students are strongly encouraged to register early and to advise NISH of their device concept so that they can receive feedback and design suggestions from NISH rehabilitation engineers in the development of their device.

University students work throughout the academic year and are eligible to win cash prizes up to $10,000.

Have an idea for a killer mobile appusing VTA transit data? Well, then it’s
time to build it.

We publish our GTFS data to the publicin an e?ort to enable greater public use
of public transit information to improverider’s experience. We want you to
create the perfect transit mobile app,and if you do you could get a new tablet
computer.

How to enter:

Review the Official Rules for the VTA app contest.

Create an application using VTA transit data.

Use the Online Form to submit your entry.

Entry Period Begins: 9:00 a.m. PDT June 6, 2011 and ends on September 23, 2011

All quali?ed apps will be put on our website, and winning apps will be
