The Center for Science, Technology, and Society (CSTS) seeks proposals for grants to support student projects aligned with the mission of the center “to understand and enable the innovative application of science and technology for global benefit.” The Center will fund projects in amounts of up to $2,000 each for single investigators and up to $3,000 for teams of investigators.

Examples of the areas of interest to the CSTS include, but are not limited to:

Investigation of the interfaces between science, technology, and society;
Research, development, or application of science and technology for social benefit; in this context, sustainable, clean technologies are currently of particular interest to the CSTS.

Funded students are expected to submit a report describing project outcome(s) to the CSTS upon completion. Public presentation or publication of results in refereed journals is also strongly encouraged.

I. Eligibility

All enrolled SCU undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply.

II. Application process

Applicants for CSTS Faculty Research Grants should submit the following to Erin Berkenmeier eberkenmeier@scu.edu by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009. Applications must be submitted electronically as .pdf files.

The proposal should not exceed three [3] single-spaced pages and must include each of the following components:

Title and description of project;
Timetable (Grant period will normally be the academic year in which the award is made, but extensions will be considered upon written request.);
Relevance to the mission of the CSTS;
Itemized budget with justification;
Letter of support from faculty member(s) overseeing the research project;
Current resumé;
Copies of transcripts showing academic record at SCU and any other institution of higher education attended.

Proposed research that entails the use of human subjects, laboratory animals, radiological hazards, biohazards, or recombinant DNA must comply with university policies and external requirements. It is anticipated that awards will be announced on or about November 18, 2009.

III. Budget Guidelines

Funds awarded through this program may be used for equipment and supplies needed to support the proposed project. Funds may be requested for travel only if necessary for completion of the project, or for attending a professional conference at which the results of the project are being presented. They may not be used for student stipends.

Overseas Summer Research

THE 2010 APPLICATION IS NOW OPEN!

The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) goals are to introduce U.S. graduate students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research setting, and to help students initiate scientific relationships that will better enable future collaboration with foreign counterparts. Selected students participate in research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan. All institutes, except Japan, last approximately 8 weeks from June to August. Japan lasts approximately 10 weeks from June to August..

Awardees will receive the following:

$ 5,000 stipend
International round-trip airfare to the host location
Support for attending a pre-departure orientation in the Washington, D.C. area. Awardees will be reimbursed for the costs of attending the event.
Abroad living expenses by foreign co-sponsoring organizations, and an orientation to the science environment and culture(s) of each location

Program Eligibility:

As of the deadline date of the application year, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

U.S. citizen or permanent resident;
Enrolled in a research-oriented master's or Ph.D. degree program (including joint degree programs);
Students enrolled in joint Bachelor/Master's programs must have graduated from the undergraduate degree;
Enrolled at a U.S. institution in the United States; and
Pursuing studies in fields of science and engineering research and education supported by the National Science Foundation (see Section X in solicitation for details).

Applications submitted by persons who do not meet ALL the above criteria will be returned without review.

Previous EAPSI awardees may apply, but only to a new host location (Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, or Taiwan).

Students selected for the program who are matriculated at the time of application and subsequently graduate may still receive an award and participate in the EAPSI program.

NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION GRADUATE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced the opening of the 2009-2010 competition for the Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). The NSF GRFP is one of the most prestigious science and engineering fellowship programs in the United States. Awardees are provided three years of graduate school support. Fellows receive a $30,000 annual stipend, a $10,500 annual cost of education allowance, a one-time $1,000 international travel allowance, and access to TeraGrid supercomputing facilities.

The program ensures the quality, diversity and vitality of the next generation of U.S. scientists and researchers. The GRFP is intended for students in the early stages of their graduate career who are seeking research-based master's or PhD degrees in NSF-supported disciplines. Applicants should have completed no more than 12 months of graduate study and must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents prior to the application deadline date. Women, under-represented minorities, and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply for the GRFP.

Faculty with significant research experience and interaction with graduate students are encouraged to register as panel reviewers for the NSF GRFP at http://panelists.asee.org. If selected, panelists will be invited for a three-day review session that takes place in the Washington, DC, area in early February.

Since 1952, NSF has funded more than 42,000 Graduate Research Fellows. President Obama has vowed to triple the number of awards in this program, from about 1,000 per year to 3,000 per year by 2012.

Research Awards

The National Research Council of the National Academies sponsors a number of awards for graduate, postdoctoral and senior researchers at federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards provide generous stipends ($30,000 - $35,000 for graduate students, $42,000 - $75,000 per year for recent Ph.D. recipients and higher for additional experience), and the opportunity to do independent research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the laboratories, foreign nationals.

Research Associateship Programs

The mission of the NRC Research Associateship Programs (RAP) is to promote excellence in scientific and technological research conducted by the U. S. government through the administration of programs offering graduate, postdoctoral, and senior level research opportunities at sponsoring federal laboratories and affiliated institutions.

In these programs, prospective applicants select a research project or projects from among the large group of opportunities listed on this website. Prior to completing an application, prospective applicants should contact the proposed Research Adviser to assure that funding will be available if their application is recommended by NRC panels. Once mutual interest is established between a prospective applicant and a Research Adviser, an application is submitted through the NRC WebRap system. Reviews are conducted four times each year and review results are available approximately 6-8 weeks following the application deadline

Prospective applicants should read carefully the details of the program to which they are applying. In particular, note eligibility details. Some laboratories have citizenship restrictions (open only to U.S. citizens and permanent residents) and some laboratories have research opportunities that are not open to senior applicants (more than 5 years beyond the PhD). When searching for research opportunities you may limit your search to only those laboratories which match your eligibility criteria. In addition, note the application deadlines as not all laboratories participate in all reviews.

NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Awards

Deadline: January 11

Funding: NASA expects to award 20 undergraduate and five graduate scholarships to students in aeronautics or related fields. Undergraduate students entering their second year of study will receive up to $15,000 per year for two years and the opportunity to receive a $10,000 stipend by interning at a NASA research center during the summer. Graduate students will receive up to $35,000 per annually for up to three years, with an opportunity to receive a $10,000 stipend interning at a NASA research center up to two consecutive summers.

Eligibility: Students who have not committed to a specific academic institution or program still may apply. However, if accepted, they must be admitted by fall 2010 into a suitable aeronautical engineering program or related field of study at an accredited U.S. university. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. Scholarship money may be used for tuition and other school-related expenses.
