Major in Ethnic Studies*
Ethnic Studies focuses on race and ethnicity leading to a deeper understanding of United States history and society.
A companion major in Ethnic Studies, which requires it to be paired with a primary major, is advantageous for undergraduates who wish to combine their primary major (e.g., Political Science, Sociology, English, Psychology, Communications, Business, etc.) with a specialized or comparative focus on racial and ethnic communities in both a U.S. and transnational context. The foundational themes of the Ethnic Studies curriculum focus on social justice, civic engagement, and community service for the following racial groups: African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latinos/as, and Native Americans. Students who choose to combine Ethnic Studies with a traditional discipline will further enhance their opportunities for graduate study and/or professional careers involving interaction with emerging racial and ethnic communities in the following areas: law, public policy, domestic and international business, education, political participation, heath care, and social services.
*Companion or second major only.
