Mark Ravizza, S.J., Associate Professor of Philosophy
Mark Ravizza, S.J., recalls counseling a student in his Ethics in Society class. She was struggling to find a topic for a paper. Then the student recalled an encounter she had while volunteering at a hospital: a patient sought extra time with her, and she had turned away. The student's experience models a theory of ethical reflection Ravizza and a colleague are developing. "First, there is some experience that creates a sense of disequilibrium. Next, the person reflects on that discomfort and tries to articulate what it was about. Finally, the person comes to a better understanding of his or her own values and perhaps changes them in the process." |
