Housing

Home sweet home: More than 12 years ago, Santa Clara began organizing incoming freshmen and continuing students into cooperative learning/living environments called Residential Learning Communities. These communities were so successful from an academic and social perspective that now all incoming students—residents, transfers, and commuters—are assigned to one of our eight RLCs. Students in RLCs live together in the same residence halls, have common interests like the humanities or sciences, and take classes together, but pursue independent majors and outside interests, too.

With the help of resident advisors, faculty directors, student leaders, and fellow students, you’ll learn how to get around campus, organize study groups, balance school and fun, and get involved in meaningful ways. All these resources are available and easy to take advantage of whenever you want to participate.

Your RLC will determine where you live, too. Santa Clara has 10 residence halls, mostly with traditional double rooms and large common bathrooms. In addition to basic furniture like a bed and desk, all rooms have private phone lines, cable TV hookups, and high-speed Internet connections. The residence halls are all in the main campus area, so you’re never more than a short walk away from the library, the student center, or that 9 a.m. class. During your first year, we definitely recommend you live on campus—almost all freshmen do. It’s the best way to adjust to college life, make friends who have common interests (and class schedules), and enjoy everything Santa Clara offers.

Dining

Forget mystery meat and meal plans. The food here is great; a lot of it is made from fresh and local ingredients every day, and we can meet almost any special dietary need. The main dining venue at Santa Clara is a marketplace, not a cafeteria; it’s centrally located and open all day. Our dining plans operate on points, so you can eat a light snack without losing a whole “meal” from your plan. And the great thing about Santa Clara’s restaurant collection, which includes a café, a late-night lounge, a juice bar, and a convenience store, is that there’s always at least one venue open from 7 a.m. until midnight.
