Blessed Are the Poor

In the spirit of solidarity and social justice, several SCU departments, in conjunction with many local musicians and artists, will donate their time and talents to the April 19 production of Henry Mollicone’s “Beatitude Mass.” All proceeds will be divided equally among the local homeless advocacy organizations Casa de Clara, EHC LifeBuilders, and Sacred Heart Community Service.

The choral and orchestral work chronicles the tale of Adam and Evelyn, characters inspired by interviews with homeless people in California and Oregon conducted by librettist William Luce and Mollicone. Their hope is that through these characters and this work, people see the similarities between all people.

“This is such a beautiful opportunity for us to demonstrate how art can illuminate social issues and incite social change,” says Lisa Rademacher, director of the Center of Performing Arts. “The most beautiful thing about art is that it can really touch people in a way that sometimes words and statistics do not. So it’s not just about raising funds, but about motivating people to take action as well.”

The piece will be preceded by a performance by the SCU Chamber Singers and the dance piece “Light, Seeking Light…” choreographed by Kristin Kusanovich, SCU dance professor and Justice and the Arts Initiative co-director.
