Mark Your Calendars: Campus Classes and Cultural Events

There is an abundance of cultural and entertain- ment opportunities geared to the over-50 crowd on campus this fall—and many events are open to those too young for an AARP card, too.

Join the more than 600 adult learners age 50 and over enrolled in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Santa Clara University. For only $30 a year, members enjoy free admission to all Bronco athletic events (except men’s basketball), discounts to performing arts events, access to OLLI classes for small fees ($25–$60), and other benefits. The new quarter kicks off with a free reception in the Arts and Sciences building on Thursday, September 3, from 5 to 7 p.m.

This quarter's offerings include a collection of classes ranging from films of the 1950s to memoir writing. "The classes are a great way to keep your brain going. There are no tests and no homework, but they make you think," said retired engineer Frank Barone, an OLLI member on the curriculum committee and chairman of the advisory board.

Professors teaching the classes learn a lot as well, noted Bob Senkewicz, professor of history and the new faculty director of OLLI, who has taught three history courses in the program. "It's been a fun experience to engage with lifelong learners. The enthusiasm of the Osher students taking the classes is contagious. I always learn something from them."

Even younger arts patrons can enjoy the drama, music, and dance shows on campus. Among the performances this fall:

October 3: A piano concert by Hans Boepple.

November 3, 5, and6: This year's New Music Festival, featuring the music of Joan Tower and Californian composers.

November 6-8 and 11-14: The Saint Plays, which explores the relevance of historical saints in today's world using dance, music, and theatrical elements, by Erik Ehn.

December 14: The ever-popular Festival of Lights concert by the SCU Choral Ensemble.
