Earthquakes Rumbling into Town

This spring, the Broncos won’t be the only team with home-field advantage at Buck Shaw Stadium. The venue will also be primary home stadium for the Earthquakes, San Jose’s Major League Soccer team. Though the season opener is April 3, the team will not play on the SCU campus until May 3 because the Earthquakes will play at multiple sites, including McAfee Coliseum in Oakland. The current Earthquakes roster includes former Broncos Ryan Cochrane and Joe Cannon.

Since most of the MLS games will be on Saturday evenings at 7 p.m., the Earthquakes’ games will not interfere with SCU’s use of the facility, which the professional team has upgraded with new lights and an increased capacity from 6,000 to 4,000 additional seats for a total of 10,000.

Officials are encouraging fans to take public transportation. The Earthquakes are working on having shuttles from nearby locales as well. Organizers anticipate up to 2,900 cars on game days. (On a typical school day, SCU hosts 2,500 cars.) Since games are usually on the weekend, SCU will have 1,200 spaces open on campus for fans, as well as 1,060 across El Camino Real. Permits for both sites will be sold in advance by specific lot to preclude driving around to hunt for a space.

Parking and procedures will be reviewed after the first game and adjusted accordingly.
