Getting Started with Google Analytics

Requirements

A Gmail account is needed to access Google Analytics. To secure an account, go to www.google.com and click the Gmail link at the top of the page.

Once your Gmail account has been established, contact either Russ Morris or Brian Washburn to complete the process.

Login to Google Analytics

Open a browser window.

Go to www.google.com/analytics.

Login using your Gmail ID and password.

At the Account Home page, click:

Three selections will appear:

  1. www.scu.edu [DEFAULT] - the default, all traffic combined
  2. WWW Off Campus – traffic from off campus only
  3. WWW On Campus – traffic from on campus only

To create a report for all traffic combined, click www.scu.edu [DEFAULT]

The Visitors Overview window appears along with left column navigation.

  1. Click the Content link in the navigation. The menu expands.
  2. Next, click the Site Content link in the navigation, the menu expands once more, then...
  3. Click the Pages link in the navigation.

The resulting Pages report will contain:

Locate the Viewing section just beneath the chart. In the search field, type in the sub-site you're interested in viewing (example: /subsite-name/) and click the magnifying glass icon:

The results for your sub-site will load in the same window. You'll see:
 

Changing the date range

Click the down arrow or the date in the area at upper right, located above the chart. The view changes to display the three most recent months along with two fields that allow you to change the range of dates for the report. To display the updated statistics, click Apply.

Compare to past

Again, click the down arrow or the date in the area at upper right, located above the chart. Click the checkbox labeled Compare to past and then click Apply to see the current month's numbers compared to last month's. You can compare year to year, as well.

Exporting a Pages report for printing

Just below the page title is an Export button that when clicked reveals output options for PDF, XML, CSV (comma separated values), and TSV (tab separated values). PDF works extremely well for printing.
