Thanks to everyone for braving that nasty downpour to attend - and thanks to those who called or emailed letting me know they wouldn't be at the meeting. Much appreciated.
CLAY HAMILTON, BRIAN WASHBURN
Clay and Brian gave an update on the progress made over the past year with the assessment for a redesign of scu.edu. Clay related that insights gleaned through conversations with other universities and design consultants about best practices, tools, maintenance, and staffing served as a starting point for building a case to present to leadership.
From this research a presentation was developed for SCU's Trustee Marketing Committee, which resulted in a set of three scenarios being developed... catch-up (much like the 2007 redesign), incremental (a redesign with technology improvements implemented in a phased approach), and transformational (start fresh, cutting edge improvements).
There was consultation with outside agencies to discover what each of those scenarios would require, resulting in a recommendation to go with the incremental approach - a smart way to learn and implement new technologies while establishing a way to manage them.
Once the Provost finishes the University's Strategic Plan, the status of going forward with the redesign will become much clearer. Fingers crossed, there is much to be optimistic about.
These are the needs that were identified... Contemporary, adaptive designs. Flexibility with design and layout customization. More support for content development. Efficient information management. Cloud and Social Media integration. Best practices for in-house developed tools. Make better use of analytics and SEO. All in support of the Strategic Plan that's being developed.
Clay showed examples of university home pages (Regis, Loyola, Notre Dame) that demonstrate these ideas.
From this, recommended areas of focus are a revamp of information architecture, UI/UX improvements across scu.edu, Intranet, Mobile and Cloud computing, Social Media, Content development and management, and accessibility.
An SCU Intranet is the big unknown. If there's a way to separate content intended for internal audiences, how would that be accomplished? Google Sites? And what about workload? Will Site Admins have to support both an external and an internal Web presence?
To handle ongoing management of the redesign effectively, adequate staffing will be required: Interactive Director, User Interface/User Experience Developer, Web Communications Strategist/Writer, Videographer/Photographer.
The redesign project timeline depends on a go-ahead for funding from leadership, but a tentative launch date is January 2015.
If you have any questions, please contact Clay.

The Getting Started with Google Analytics page has been updated. Recent navigation/label changes prompted the update...
We're now able to use SCU Gmail addresses when logging to Google Analytics (GA). If in the past you've provided your personal Gmail addy for access and would like to switch to using your SCU addy instead, send Russ Morris a note requesting the change. Any new Commonspot accounts created will be given access to GA with their SCU Gmail address.
The Benson Fountain Webcam is officially dead, while the Mission Gardens cam continues to generate images. There's an effort underway to replace the two existing cams and add more.

Pat Dutcher/OMC shared that there's a plan in development to update the Majors pages replacing functional content with marketing language.
