December Update
All,
I hope your December has started off well. As we approach the end of the fall quarter and head into the holiday season, please know how thankful I am for you all. Together we have done a lot of great things and I hope everyone has a wonderful break and holiday.
VPGP Update
Attached you will see the first ever centralized graduate flyer (one for domestic and one for international) that gives an overview of all our graduate programs. Thank you to each graduate assistant dean, Olivia, and Sam in UMC for their help in putting this together.
As of today, we are ahead in graduate units for winter quarter. We are at 16,009 and last year for winter we finished with 15,913. I expect the units to go up slightly with some programs still enrolling their new winter admits. To be up in units again overall is tremendous. Great job team!
The graduate schools/colleges are working closely with Susan and Matt on creating a graduate portal for admitted students. A ton of work, but important to help our students learn more about SCU and their program. All the graduate students will see the new welcome video from me. Click here to see the short welcome video.
Graduate ProgramsNovember Highlights
Jesuit School of Theology
-
On November 15, Dr. M. Shawn Copeland of Boston College's Department of Theology served as JST’s inaugural Thea Bowman Lecturer. She spoke to a rapt, full audience of living within “grace that works in us the radical transcendence of Black Catholic life.”
-
JST has sponsored approximately 20 students’ visits to CARNE y ARENA, an Academy Award-winning virtual reality exhibit created by Alejandro González Iñárritu. The immersive rendering of the risks and heartache of the path taken by many to immigrate to the United States is complemented by a video archive of people recounting the experiences that led to their immigration, shaped their journey, or followed from it. The exhibit integrates reflection on a pressing social issue, cutting-edge technology, and art in a manner that complements the Ignatian mission of SCU in ways that are specifically evocative of the Catholic and Ignatian theological tradition.

GPPM
-
We continue to see increased interest in our programs largely due to the assistance of the Graduate Provost Office Team (Toby, Minh, Olivia, Matt, Susan) who have been super helpful in connecting our programs with targeted groups. Olivia has recently debuted a significant ad presence on Facebook and Instagram for us.
-
This interest coincides with making our programs accessible fully online. Our hope is that advertising to a wider demographic and making our programs available beyond our primarily California focus will give the GPPM a broader reach and profile. Bi-monthly open houses for groups are scheduled throughout the year and individual sessions are always welcome.
-
We have been working on developing new relationships with dioceses and groups and working to develop programs that meet their needs.
School of Law
- Fall recruiting season for the Law Admissions and Financial Aid team wrapped up in November. We participated in 35 admissions events this fall (33 in-person events and 2 “Digital Forums”). We made a conscious decision to not participate in other virtual events which have not been successful over the past couple of years, while still being very expensive. We also focused on events that were more focused on law school recruiting, with the exception of several graduate and professional school fairs at several strong feeder schools (e.g., UC Santa Barbara and St. Mary’s).
- We host our last fall online application workshop on December 7. Our workshops will resume early next year.
- Event: Determining Users’ Ages Online: Ethical, Legal, and Technical Considerations: December 1 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
- Event: Bar Swearing-In Ceremony (for law alumni who passed the bar exam), December 5 @ 5:00 pm - 5:30 pm, Mission Church
- News: Santa Clara University Hosts Inaugural Innovator Diversity Pilots Conference
Thank you all for your help and leadership with our graduate programs.
Best,
