English Proficiency

Our requirements for English proficiency differ based on your program of interest.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and IELTS (International English Language Testing System) scores must be sent directly from the testing agency to SCU, institution codes listed below. 

Undergraduate

Visit the Undergrad Admission International Student section for requirements.

Business Graduate Programs

If your first language is not English (regardless of whether your schooling was in English) you must take the TOEFL.

Minimum TOEFL score: IBT 100 (Institution Code 4851, Department 02)

Minimum IELTS score: 7.0

The TOEFL may be waived if your score is in the 50th percentile or higher on the verbal portion of the GMAT/GRE or if you obtained a degree from an accredited U.S. institution.

Engineering Graduate Programs

If English is not your first language or if you do not have a degree awarded by a U.S. university/college, you must take either the TOEFL or IELTS (even if you are a U.S. citizen).

Minimum TOEFL score: IBT/79-80 or CBT: 213 (Institution Code: 4851)

Minimum IELTS score: 6.5

Education and Counseling Psychology Graduate Programs

If you completed your post-secondary education in a language other than English, you must take TOEFL or IELTS. This requirement may be waived if your Bachelor's (and Master's, if applicable) was completed at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction. However, all applicants may be asked to provide further evidence of English proficiency as needed.

Minimum TOEFL score: 90 (Institution Code: 4851)

Minimum IELTS score: 6.5

Law School Programs

If you are applying to the JD program, there are no English proficiency requirements.

The LLM program requires non-native English speakers to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Scores submitted within three years of taking the exam are acceptable. TOEFL or IELTS scores are only required if the individual is seeking an F-1 or J-1 visa for study in the United States.

Graduate Program in Pastoral Ministries

If you completed your post-secondary education in a language other than English, you must take TOEFL or IELTS. We may waive this requirement if your Bachelor's (and Master's, if applicable) were completed at institutions in which English is the primary language of instruction. However, all applicants may be asked to provide further evidence of English proficiency as needed.

Minimum TOEFL score: 90 (Institution Code: 4851)

Minimum IELTS score: 6.5

Jesuit School of Theology

If you completed your post-secondary education in a language other than English and/or English is not your native language, you must take TOEFL.

We will waive this requirement if you have completed at least one year of full-time graduate study in an institution where English is the language of instruction. In this case you must submit a sample of your academic writing of approximately 20 pages in length.

Minimum TOEFL score: 90 (Institution Code: 4390)
