Santa Clara requires a minimum level of English proficiency of all our applicants.
You are exempt from taking a proficiency exam if you are from a country whose official language is English or if you attended your entire high school career (4 years) at a school whose instruction is conducted in English.
To be considered for admission, we will accept the following English proficiency exams and respective score minimums. English courses at a community college or U.S. university do not fulfill this requirement.
Please submit ONE of the following through your application status portal to demonstrate English Proficiency:
- IELTS: 6.5
- TOEFL (iBT): 90
- TOEFL (PBT): 575
- SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 630
- ACT Reading: 27 and ACT English: 27
First-Year International Student Interview Options
Due to increase in requests from students wishing to sit for an interview Santa Clara partners with Duolingo, InitialView and Vericant as third party video interview companies. Unfortunately, given our limited counseling staff, SCU does not offer in-person interviews on or off campus. We accept these interviews as an optional supplement to your application. Please register directly with Duolingo, InitialView or Vericant for your in-person or virtual interview. Please note: Duolingo offers an English Proficiency exam and an interview through their online program. Santa Clara will be reviewing the interview component for those submitted. The Duolingo English Proficiency exam score is not currently accepted as an English Proficiency Test that meets our requirements.
Although the interview is not mandatory, we recommend you sit for an interview, as it will give you an excellent opportunity to showcase your language skills, interests, and professionalism to our admissions team. Our admission committee will review your Duolingo, InitialView or Vericant interview as part of our holistic evaluation process and see the additional effort of submitting an interview as part of demonstrating your interest in Santa Clara.
International Transfer Student Interview Option:
Beginning Winter 2018 - U.S. based international students currently attending a U.S. based community college and applying for transfer admission are eligible to submit a Duolingo exam and interview in place of TOEFL or IELTS.
