Brandon Van Gogh Takes Top Prize in Collegiate Artist Competition in Davis, CA

 2019 Davis participants

Ryan Reynolds (faculty), Laura Diggs, Stina Arstorp, Brandon Van Gogh, Berkeley Hoerr, Bella Ilk-Greenhill and Kelly Detweiler (faculty).

Five Santa Clara Art students attended the 10th Annual Art of Painting in the 21st Century conference at the John Natsoulas Gallery in Davis, California which featured lectures and workshops by some of the leading painters in the United States. This year the conference also featured a collegiate competition to (as the accompanying full-color catalogue describes) “bridge the gap between the upcoming generation of painters and the giants whose footsteps they follow.” This is an unusual opportunity and an important professional experience for our artist-Broncos. Our own Brandon van Gogh, Studio Art major, won the top prize: Best of Show. He is featured in this photo with other students participating at the conference and the Mayor of Davis, Brett Lee.

Student participation is by faculty nomination only; colleges and universities from around the state are represented in this year’s competition. SCU students’ attendance was funded in part by a Travel Grant from the Provost’s Office.
