Kathy Aoki: "Happiness, Liberty, Life? American Art and Politics"

Kathy Aoki was commissioned by the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum (PAFA) in Philadelphia to create three new humorous prints for the exhibition "Happiness, Liberty, Life? American Art and Politics," on display now through September 18, 2016. Aoki's new works are direct responses to famous portraits of George Washington in the collection of the PAFA museum. In early June, the PAFA collections committee approved all three of Aoki's prints for acquisition. For the exhibition installation, the museum intermixed Aoki's contemporary prints with works from the 18th and 19th centuries on the "Wall of Washington." Democrats in town for the national convention will enjoy Aoki's piece "Small Hands," which portrays George Washington breaking up a fight between Donald Trump and Marco Rubio.
